West Gate began as a storefront library in the West Gate Shopping Center in 1969 and moved to its present location in the Spring of 1975. Several years later in 1986 the branch was chosen as a test site for the library system's first automated circulation system. Since that time the community and the use of the library have grown by leaps and bounds.

In 1995 the West Gate Branch Library became a regional library, open seven days a week, circulating 35,000 items monthly. Since becoming a regional library, the branch has expanded its shelf space, added a new magazine area and enjoyed the introduction of videocassettes, audio tapes, music on CD-ROM, and many new sophisticated reference sources. In addition, the circulating collection has grown in keeping with the library's new status, and there is a selection of on-line electronic sources.

West Gate is a family-oriented facility that provides many educational and recreational programs for adults and children. Programming for children is especially extensive. Programs include toddler story times, preschool story times, after school specials, and a full range of summer activities. The Children's Librarian works closely with Headstart, which is favorably located to the rear of the library grounds, and with home-schoolers who are very active in Town & Country.
