Magazine & Newspaper Collection

The magazine and newspaper collection in the John F. Germany Public Library on 2 East includes current and back issues of over 1,000 magazines, newspapers and indexes in print, microfilm and electronic formats. All are shelved on open stacks directly accessible to you. (In order to assure access for all, magazines and newspapers at the Germany Library may not be checked out.)

If it is inconvenient for you to visit the library in person, you may be able to take advantage of our fax delivery service. Up to five pages of an article can be faxed to your home, business, or to the branch library closest to you. And if you need a copy of an article from a journal not owned by the library, take advantage our Interlibrary Loan service to place a Photocopy Request. Call the library at 273-3652 x2 to request either of these services.

Magazines: The magazine collection provides access to current and retrospective issues of a broad range of magazines and journals in microfilm, bound volumes and loose individual issues. A limited number of magazines in Spanish, French, or German also are available. Check the online Library Catalog for magazine titles and holdings.

Newspapers: Selected papers from major Florida and national cities are available on 2 East as well as a limited number of international newspapers. Available newspaper titles and holdings are listed in the Library Catalog.

Comprehensive holdings for local papers and major national newapapers are summarized below:

  • Tampa Tribune: Microfilm available from 1893 to the present. Card index file for 1985 - 1989. TRAILS (via the online library catalog) indexes selected obituary and local history articles. Online, full text, searchable access from 1990 to the present on Newsbank.

  • St. Petersburg Times: Microfilm available from 1900 to the present. Online, full text from 1987 to the present on Newsbank.

  • New York Times: Microfilm available from 1851 to the present. Print indexes from 1862 to the present. Access to the historic collection of the New York Times is available on the Library's Information Gateway. You will find full text searching and full page images from 1851-2001.

  • Chicago Tribune: Access to the historic collection of the Chicago Tribune is available on the Library's Information Gateway. You will find full text searching and full page images from 1890-1984.

The newspaper collection also includes substantial microfilm back files of the Tampa Times, Wall Street Journal and Christian Science Monitor. Other newspapers are retained only for the most current one to three months depending on the title.

Electronic Access: The Magazines & Newspapers page on the Information Gateway links to a number of the best online periodical sources on the Web. Some of the databases, like InfoTrac OneFile, eLibrary and America's Newspapers via NewsBank provide full text access to articles. Other resources include indexes, directories and union lists. It provides you with Web links to selected English and foreign language papers from around the world.
