Babies love books! Have you seen the excitement when a child hands you a book anxiously waiting for you to read to them? Have you ever seen the delight in a baby’s eye when a picture book is set before them? Babies love books from the time they are born. Raising a reader begins before your child learns to read! Children who are good readers perform better in school. But do not wait until your child is school age to encourage reading. Start now while your baby is young.

Born to Read is a program sponsored by the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative whose goal is to increase awareness of reading to children. Born to Read provides information on:

  • Why it’s important to read to children
  • How to read to children
  • Age appropriate books and materials

  • Activities that increase language skills
  • Early literacy skills
  • Finger games, rhymes, songs and stories
Classes are offered at local libraries and many community agencies to expectant parents and parents of children, newborn to 3 years old, to teach them how to use books to interact with infants. Information packets are distributed to local hospitals, health clinics, teen parent programs and various other community agencies.

Many agencies work with Born to Read to help promote reading to young children and assist in distributing informational packets. Born to Read would like to thank their partners for their encouragement and support.
